Before Bayern Munich departed for their Asian tour to South Korea on Saturday, club president Herner criticized FIFA president Gianni Infantino's idea of selling his World Cup stake.
Gianni Infantino had unilaterally proposed selling a portion of FIFA's competitions to private investors. According to media reports, Infantino had requested member associations to respond by September 19th. Between Friday night and Saturday morning, the FIFA president announced the termination of these plans.
However, criticism of Infantino did not diminish. UEFA and CONCACAF subsequently issued statements strongly condemning the Swiss national and demanding an explanation for the events leading up to the withdrawal. International media also responded with ridicule and sarcasm after his withdrawal of the plan.
Hainer stated that it is now imperative to ensure such ideas are no longer on the table, and he described the transparency of this process as "incredible."
"Football should remain football. FIFA, as the highest governing body, is responsible for organizing football. If external investors try to influence decisions, there is always a risk that the fundamental principles and structure of football will be undermined and mistakes will be made as a result."
